Analysis of Multidimensional Poverty among Households and the Overlapping Dimensions of Deprivation

Using Results from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey – Yemen, 2022 – 2023
Yemen’s First Multidimensional Poverty and Child Deprivation Analysis

SPRI Global provided technical support for Yemen’s first national analysis of multidimensional household poverty and child deprivation. This significant study, led by Yemen’s Central Statistical Organization (CSO) with UNICEF’s backing, marks a pioneering effort in Yemen and one of the earliest comprehensive analyses of its kind in the Arab region. The report uniquely examines both household poverty and child-specific deprivation through a participatory, nationally owned methodology developed alongside local experts, key ministries, and international technical advisors from SPRI Global.

The analysis utilized data from the 2022-2023 Yemen Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), highlighting severe multidimensional deprivation impacting crucial sectors such as nutrition, education, health, housing, water, sanitation, and child protection. It emphasizes the significant disparities between rural and urban areas and among different socioeconomic groups.

The findings underscore the necessity of addressing poverty beyond monetary dimensions, emphasizing that effective poverty alleviation must consider overlapping vulnerabilities that affect children disproportionately. Yemen’s socioeconomic crisis, intensified by prolonged conflict, has rendered children particularly susceptible to long-term deprivation and poverty cycles.

SPRI Global’s involvement included comprehensive technical support from methodology design and analysis to validation and final reporting stages, contributing to evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at reducing multidimensional poverty and enhancing child well-being across Yemen.
