SPRI Global is supporting UNICEF WCARO in establishing a multidimensional child poverty analysis, at the regional level, to measure progress of the Sustainable Development Goals frameworks in the West and Central Africa Region (WCAR). The specific objectives of this research activity include:

  • Developing a WCAR multidimensional child poverty analysis report that serves as comparative milestone for Sustainable Development Goals and child poverty indicators in the region.
  • Developing child poverty sectors profiles (Education, Health, Nutrition and WASH) to support sectoral advocacy work.
  • Build a collaborative work with national statistic agencies in the region to strengthen the commitment to routine measurement of the multidimensional child poverty in the WCAR.

This cross-country application of MODA in the WCAR aspires to set the standard for creating an updated Sub-Saharan Africa-wide MODA analysis (SS-MODA) in the future, beyond the 2014 cross-country MODA study for Sub-Saharan African children as carried out by UNICEF Innocenti. Using the most recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) and Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) databases available for each country in the region, the MODA for the WCAR will employ the same selection of dimensions and indicators for all the countries. The choices of dimensions, indicators, and deprivation thresholds reflect the reality of the West and Central African region, while also accounting for differences between the countries. This construction would allow for an acceptable level of international comparability, without levelling out all differences between countries.

The analysis covers the following countries, subject to change:

  • Benin
  • Burkina Faso
  • Cameroon
  • Chad
  • Congo
  • Democratic Republic of
  • Congo
  • Ghana
  • Guinea
  • Guinea-Bissau
  • Ivory Coast
  • Liberia
  • Mali
  • Mauritania
  • Nigeria
  • Sao Tome and Principe
  • Senegal
  • Sierra Leone
