Trends of Change in Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment and Its Relationship to the Well-Being of Children

This study defines the approach for measuring and monitoring change in gender equality and women’s empowerment – SDG 5 – and its relationship with the wellbeing of their children (nutritional, health, educational, and protection status). The analysis is based on data from four waves of EDHS (2000, 2005, 2011 and 2016), and in addition to temporal changes attempts to highlight regional disparities and those stemming from socio-economic characteristics. Special attention is given to adolescents aged 10-19 years.

The study is overarching in the range of topics that it covers, each selected in correspondence with SDG 5 and other targets and related to rights stemming from national and international conventions, and legal and policy documents. Construction of the measure of women’s empowerment for the first time in Ethiopia and assessing its relationship with different aspects of children’s well-being aims to instigate discussions on gender-sensitive policy responses for improving children’s well-being.

The insights from the analysis are intended to enable the Government of Ethiopia and its development partners to define feasible strategies and build a rigorous justification for the sustained expansion of existing and new programmes that reach large numbers of girls and women living in poverty, vulnerability and deprivation. Using a gender perspective, the project has the potential to more broadly improve the socio-economic conditions of the girls, women and children in Ethiopia through the provision of adequate interventions in a sustainable manner.
